Maine has always had a connection with the ocean, with 3,478 miles of coastline and 3,166 offshore islands. With all this coastline, it's no wonder that Maine has a variety of marine animals living around and off the coast.
There are hundreds of fish species living off the Maine coast. This includes bony fish, like herring and cod, and many cartilaginous shark species.
It is not uncommon to see marine mammals, such as seals, whales, dolphins, and porpoises living off shore. Some as close as within popular harbors.
The beaches and waters close to shore contain a large variety of invertebrates, including numerous shellfish and the ever famous lobster.There are also several species of sea turtles that visit Maine waters, making them the only marine reptile in Maine. Several bird species make the rock shoreline and airspace above the water their homes, as well.
